How to Choose the Right Slip Ring for Your machines?

Many engineers often ask the same question: how to choose a slip ring? Selecting the right type of slip ring mainly depends on your installation method and system design. In this guide, we’ll explain how to make the right choice step by step.

1. Determine the Installation Method

The first step is to confirm whether your system includes a rotating shaft.
If your equipment has a rotating shaft, the best option is a through bore slip ring.
The inner hole of the slip ring should match the size of your shaft.
Common through-hole sizes include 12mm, 25mm, 38mm, 50mm, 60mm, 80mm, and 100mm, but customized sizes are also available depending on your needs.

2. When There Is No Rotating Shaft?

What if your installation does not have a rotating shaft?
In that case, you’ll need a flange-type slip ring.
This type doesn’t require a hollow shaft and is mounted on the end face of a rotating platform or other stationary surfaces.
Flange-type slip rings are commonly used in rotary indexing tables, display turntables, or vacuum rotary platforms.

3. Define the Number of Circuits (Paths)

Once the installation type is confirmed, the next key step is to determine the number of circuits (paths) required.
Each conductive path in a slip ring represents one electrical channel.
For example, if your 220V power supply includes a live wire and a neutral wire, that counts as two paths.

If your design involves both power and signal transmission, each must be reported separately.
For example, an Ethernet cable has eight individual signal paths.
When combining power and signal lines, the power current must be specified clearly, and any required shielding should be treated as a separate path.
Therefore, the total number of paths equals the sum of power lines, signal lines, and shielding lines.

4. Confirm Current and Signal Requirements

Each path must be rated according to its current load.
For example, if your power lines carry 10A and your signal lines carry only 2A, they require different ring materials or contact designs.
It’s important to specify both current and voltage for each path when requesting a quotation.
For hybrid applications, you may need a hybrid slip ring that can handle both power and signal channels in one compact unit.

5. Optional: Add Pneumatic or Ethernet Functions

For systems that also transmit air or fluid, consider adding pneumatic slip rings.
If your setup involves high-speed data transmission, an Ethernet slip ring can ensure stable and low-loss signal transfer.
